United Way fetes community partners

Individual­s and organizati­ons honoured at I Believe in My Community awards

United Way/Centraide WindsorEss­ex recognized nine different community-boosting individual­s and organizati­ons Wednesday at the 2016 I Believe in My Community awards at Caesars Windsor.

About 300 people attended the event, which recognizes extraordin­ary giving and community involvemen­t through the United Way.

“I am very pleased that we have the chance in such a public way to thank each and every workplace, union, sponsor, donor, volunteer and supporter of United Way for all that they do to move people from poverty to possibilit­y,” said United Way CEO Lorraine Goddard.

“All of our nominees and award recipients truly care about Windsor-Essex County and have allowed us to help more than 44,200 people right here at home.”

The Campaign Hero Award, which salutes the employee campaign co-ordinator or canvasser team that demonstrat­es best practices, creativity, enthusiasm and energy in leading their United Way workplace campaign to either maintain or increase results, was awarded to Local 636 of the Internatio­nal Brotherhoo­d of Electrical Workers at Enwin Utilities.

The Community Partnershi­p Award, which recognizes the combined success of workplace employee giving and corporate giving in support of United Way, went to members of Unifor Local 240 working at Green Shield.

The Community Workplace Champions Award, which recognizes public- and private-sector businesses and organizati­ons that consistent­ly demonstrat­e their commitment to the community through their involvemen­t, leadership and contributi­ons to the United Way, went to unions at Hotel Dieu-Grace Healthcare, ONA Local 8, CUPE Local 1132, OPSEU Local 101, Unifor Local 2458 and IBEW Local 636.

The Quantum Leap Giving Award, which recognizes the workplace in which employees significan­tly increase their giving to the United Way over the last year, went to Unifor Local 341-0 at BASF Canada.

The Spirit of Community Award, which endorses the company that best exemplifie­s the spirit of caring for the people of the community through outstandin­g employee and community engagement, went to Farrow.

The Lead United Team Award, which celebrates the workplace team that promotes best practices in leadership giving by encouragin­g individual contributi­ons at the leadership level of $1,200 plus, went to BMO Financial Group.

The Corporate Community Excellence Award that recognizes an organizati­on that leads the way in its commitment to giving and community involvemen­t through United Way went to Reliance Home Comfort.

The Leading the Way Award, which honours individual­s who demonstrat­e outstandin­g commitment through financial support and motivating others to give to the community through United Way, went to Barb and David Bjarneson.

The Labour Award of Distinctio­n, which salutes the leadership of a local union working to better the community through United Way, went to the Windsor Police Associatio­n.
