Cyclists of all ages are being asked to participate in a mental health awareness event designed to raise funds for programs within the local Canadian Mental Health Association.

A kickoff for this year’s Ride Don’t Hide was held Wednesday to unveil details for the annual event, which will take place in Windsor on Sunday, June 25.

“Ride Don’t Hide is such an important community event for us because it gets so many people involved,” said Claudia den Boer, CEO of the local CMHA branch.

“It’s a unique way to get the message out there on how we want people talking about their wellbeing, stress or anxiety. It helps people make the connection in their own relationships or with their friends.”

Participants in the cycling fundraiser have a choice of distances they can ride — 10 kilometres, 20 km, 50 km and 100 km — with the event’s start at the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society, 1671 Riverside Dr. E.

This year’s fundraiser “champion” is local Canadian Olympic team runner Noelle Montcalm.

“I’m honoured to be the ride champion,” she said.

“In one way or another everyone is affected by this. This is a good way to help reduce the stigma (around mental illness) and come together as a community in support.”

Reaching the pinnacle of sports as an Olympic athlete, Montcalm noted how many who reach that level “regularly face anxiety” or struggle with other mental health issues.

“In sports there is only one winner and the rest, technically, are losers,” she said. “You always try to compete to the best of your ability, but it hits you. So it’s great to be able to get support yourself or support others around you when they need it.”

Cyclists wishing to participate or individuals wishing to donate are asked to sign up online at ridedonthide.com.

Funds raised at the event will be used primarily to support the local CMHA’s bereavement program, client assistance fund and its Sole Focus project.
