Current, former Lancers to lead local contingent at the Francophon­e Games

Four athletes with ties to the Windsor Lancers were among 56 athletes named to Canada’s 2017 Francophon­e Games track and field team, which will compete July 21-30 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Riverside high school product Corey Bellemore, who recently wrapped up five seasons with the Lancers, was named to the team along with Alex Ullman, who also finished his five-year career with the Lancers this season, as well as former Lancer Nick Falk, also a Riverside high school product.

Arren Young, who is another former Lancer, was also named to the team while Lancers associate head coach Brett Lumley was named to the coaching staff.

GARANT POWERS CLIPPERS

Andrew Garant had three goals and finished with seven points to lead the Windsor Clippers to a 13-7 road win over the Welland Generals in OLA Junior B lacrosse action on Saturday.

Garant leads the league in scoring with 52 points in seven games and passed Brett Hickey to move into second place in the club’s career scoring list with 422 points.

Dylan Riley and Craig Marentette also scored three goals each for the Clippers. Blain Wallace had two goals and six points while Chase Kavanaugh and Nathan Salaris scored single goals for the Clippers (5-1-1).

FRATMEN DROP EXHIBITION

The Windsor AKO Fratmen dropped a 38-17 decision to the NCAA Division 3 Frostburg State University Bobcats from Maryland in an exhibition game at University of Windsor Stadium on Saturday.

“I’m very happy,” AKO head coach Mike LaChance said. “We moved the ball. The new players played well (and) vets did what we expected.”

AKO had 467 yards in offence. Quarterbac­k Brandon Reaume threw for 360 yards and two scores and also ran for 39 yards. Receiver Devon Woods pulled in seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. Defensivel­y, Adam Slikboer had eight tackles, three assists, two tackles for a loss and 1½ sacks.

STARS EARN TIE

The Windsor TFC Stars rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 on the road against the Toronto Sanjaxx Lions in League 1 Ontario men’s soccer play on Sunday.

The Lions (0-1-2) built a 2-0 lead on goals in the 29th and 32nd minutes. However, Celso Carapau got the Stars to within a goal by halftime as he scored off a penalty in the 35th minute.

Carapau then pulled Windsor even in the 49th minute with his second goal of the game and fourth in three matches this season for the Stars (1-1-1).

EAST-WEST BOWL

The Windsor Lancers’ Courtney Ellis and Leka Idowu helped the West to a 37-13 win over the East on Saturday in the 15th U Sports East-West Bowl in Quebec City.

Ellis had two solo tackles and Idowu had one solo tackle during the win with Lancers coach Vince Flamia handling defensive backs for the winning squad.
