Lumley player of year in NCAA conference

Windsor’s Jake Lumley has been named the NCAA Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s baseball player of the year for 2017.

The 22-year-old Lumley is in his senior season at Canisius College in Buffalo.

The fourth-year shortstop, who is a Holy Names high school product, had his best offensive season for the Golden Griffins.

The six-foot, 175-pound Lumley batted .358 with two home runs while driving in 21 runs and led the conference with 77 hits.

Lumley also was successful on 15-of-19 stolen base attempts and posted a .960 fielding percentage and was named a first-team conference all-star.

LANCERS SECOND AT WORLD SERIES

The Windsor Lancers’ baseball team came up just short in its quest for a National Club Baseball Associatio­n Division II World Series.

The No. 6-ranked Lancers lost 1-0 in the championsh­ip final to No. 5-ranked Slippery Rock in Pittsburg, Kan., late Tuesday.

Lancers right-hander Rob Csapo allowed just three hits in six innings while striking out three batters. Slippery Rock’s only run came in the fourth inning on a solo home run off Csapo, but the Lancers’ offence was only able to generate two hits in the loss.

Kyle Renaud of the Lancers finished second in tournament batting with a .500 average and four RBIs while Richard Chan batted .421 and Chris Rinaldi-Ross hit .400.

Csapo finished second in the tournament in earned-run average at 0.54 with Tuesday’s run the only one he allowed in 13 innings of work.

KRUTSCH HEADED TO JUCO WORLD SERIES

Essex’s Matt Krutsch is headed to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., with the Cowley College Tigers baseball team.

A sophomore left-handed pitcher, Krutsch helped the Tigers win the Region VI championsh­ip for a second straight year and will head to the world series, which opens on Saturday, as the No. 6 seed.

Krutsch went five innings to get the win in the championsh­ip final, which the Tigers won 17-8 over Neosho County.

For the regular season, Krutsch went 3-1 with a 3.81 earned-run average in 13 games and stuck out 21 batters in 26 innings of work. He started in four games.

LAJEUNESSE GIRLS OFF TO OFSAA CHAMPIONSH­IP

The Lajeunesse Royals captured the SWOSSAA girls’ A soccer championsh­ip with a 2-0 win over Pain Court.

Lauren Miles and Maya Caloncagon­g scored the goals and Sarah Hamdan posted the shutout for the Royals, who earned a berth to the OFSAA girls’ A championsh­ip with the win.

LAWN BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Skip Rae Ney, vice Don Leslie and lead Jackie Ringley captured the Chartwell Oak Park President’s Day tournament at the Windsor Lawn Bowling Club recently.

Skip Martin Henly, vice Wayne Strudwick and lead Brooke Burnett finished second while skip Anja McKenzie, vice Julie Leadbetter and lead Bev Leslie took third.
