Ex-Wolverine ‘coming home’ to golf for U of W

- JIM PARKER

The colour change will be very subtle for Windsor golfer Bryce Evon.

The 21-year-old Evon will turn in his maize and blue gear from the University of Michigan Wolverines to compete for the blue and gold of his hometown University of Windsor Lancers.

“I’m coming home for some school and some more golf,” Evon said.

“I’m really excited. It’s fun to play for my hometown university.”

A Massey high school product, Evon spent four seasons with the Wolverines and started nine of 10 tournaments in his senior year, helping the school post five topthree finishes. On average, he shot a score of 75.2 last season.

“This is massive for the program,” Lancers head coach Adam Wagner said. “We couldn’t be happier. It’s a coach’s dream to get a kid of this calibre.”

Talks to join the Lancers have been ongoing for two years between Evon and Wagner.

“Partway through my degree, my career interests kind of changed,” said Evon, who earned a degree in business at Michigan. “I wanted to go to teacher’s college to pursue being a high school teacher.

“They have math and business, which is what I’ll be pursuing (to teach), and I can play golf. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the team and the coaches at the helm.”

Evon was twice named an academic all-Big Ten at Michigan. He captured the school’s academic achievement award four times and the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2014.

“When a couple of other seniors at Michigan and I went and sunk our last putt at regionals, that was probably it for golf for a lot of them, and I get a couple more years, and in my hometown, which makes it even better,” Evon said.

The Lancers are headed to Barrie to play in the Canadian University/College Golf Championships next week. It’s the first time in the 15-year history of the event the Lancers have earned a bid after an eighth-place finish at last year’s OUA championships in Windsor. Wagner knows the addition of Evon brightens hopes for a better finish.

“He’ll definitely be a leader with the way he prepares for tournament,” Wagner said.
