Thursdays and Sundays will dominate the 34-game home schedule for the defending Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires in 2017-18.

The Sept. 21 home opener against the Saginaw Spirit is the first of 19 Thursday dates for the team, which is more than 55 per cent of the team’s home schedule.

Another 11 games (32 per cent) will be played on Sundays with three Saturday games and a Black Friday match against Kingston on Nov. 24th rounding out the regular-season schedule.

The club will have an 11-day break at Christmas from Dec. 17 to Dec. 27 and wrap up the regular season at home for the first time since 2013 with a March 18 against Saginaw.

DIPETRO GETS INVITE

Windsor Spitfires goalie Mikey DiPietro was among 30 goaltenders selected to take part in Hockey Canada’s 12th annual Program of Excellence goaltending camp.

The three-day camp will be held June 9-11 in Calgary and is used as an evaluation stage for summer development and selection camps for the under-17, under-18 and under-20 levels.

The six-foot DiPietro, who is eligible for this month’s NHL Draft, is coming off a Memorial Cup title where he was named the tournament’s top goaltender and was a third-team all-star in the Ontario Hockey League in his second year in the league.

OFSAA TENNIS GOLD

The Tecumseh Vista Vortex duo of Seija Huhtala and Camilla Marangelli captured the gold medal in high school girls’ doubles play at the OFSAA tennis championships in Toronto.

The title capped a perfect 18-0 season for the 16-year-old Huhtala and 17-year-old Marangelli, who did not lose a match in WECSSAA, SWOSSAA or OFSAA play.

The two, who were teamed a year ago at WECSSAA and won a silver medal, beat the second-seeded team and fourth-seeded team at OFSAA, which had a field of 34 teams, and claimed the title with an 8-2 win over a team from Toronto in the final.

CABOTO WINS TOURNEY

The 2003 Caboto Blue Devils girls’ soccer team won the Stratford Soccer Classic championship.

The Blue Devils erased a twogoal deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation and took the match 3-2 in overtime.

Nathalie Villalta got the comeback started for Caboto. With two minutes to play, Olivia Rizzo produced the equalizer, off a corner created by Gabriella Idone, to tie it.

Rizzo then netted the winner in overtime off a free kick.
