Belle River’s Noelle Montcalm is one step closer to a spot on Canada’s national team for the World Track and Field Championships in England.

The 29-year-old Montcalm met Athletics Canada’s A standard for the vent at the 30th AtletiCAGeneve — Memorial Georges Caillat meet in Switzerland.

Montcalm, who was a member of Canada’s 2016 Olympic team, finished fourth in the women’s 400-metre hurdles in a time of 55.85, which easily bettered the A standard of 56.10.

“My plan, in going over to Europe at this point in the season, was to get in a couple competitive opportunities with the goal of achieving world standard prior to nationals,” Montcalm said. “I raced in Basel, which was a season best 56.38 and good tune up for Saturday’s race.

“I know I am fit and what I am capable of and it was just remaining confident in myself, the training I’ve done, and the race plan coach (Don Garrod) and I set. The conditions and competition were set for a great race and I am pleased to have seized the opportunity and come away with the standard at this point in the season.”

Montcalm must still have a top two placing at next month’s Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa to officially secure a spot.
