Windsor’s Banga to play pro hockey in Germany

Windsor’s Sammy Banga has signed a contract to play profession­al hockey in Germany with EC Harzer Falken in 2017-18.

The 24-year-old Banga, who played two seasons with the junior B LaSalle Vipers, just wrapped up four seasons at Brock University.

“I am very excited for the hockey, but more importantl­y the life experience of moving and living in a new country,” Banga told the school’s website.

A Windsor Junior Spitfires product, Banga was named rookie of the year in his first season at Brock and produced 39 goals and 95 points in 101 games over four OUA seasons.

“I had the best experience, on and off the ice, and made lifelong relationsh­ips in the process,” Banga said of his time at Brock.

LANGLOIS MAKES CUT

Point guard Miah-Marie Langlois was among 15 athletes selected to Phase 2 of the women’s national team program camp, which will run June 19-25 in Edmonton.

“This second phase of training is focused on developing our athletes as we assess our path forward to the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup,” national team head Lisa Thomaidis said of the Aug. 7-13 event in Argentina. “The exhibition tournament in China will help determine what we need to build upon as we progress to the final phase of training.”

The Team will travel to China for a six-game exhibition tournament against China, Lithuania and Nigeria from July 1-8. Langlois is one of three players that will not travel to China, but remain in the plans for Argentina.

SENIOR OLYMPICS MEDALS

Leamington’s Jill Jackson-Jakob and Amherstbur­g’s Nancy Loeffler-Caro each captured medals in badminton at the Senior Olympics in Birmingham, Ala.

Jackson-Jakob won the gold medal in women’s singles 60 and over division, captured a silver medal with Loeffler-Caro in the women’s doubles 55 and over division and a secured bronze medal in mixed doubles with partner Dennis Jutzi, who is from Sarnia.

LEAMINGTON LAKERS TITLE

The Leamington Lakers won the Stratford Nationals Midget A Baseball Tournament.

Leamington edged the host Stratford Indians 3-2 in the final to capture the title. The Lakers trailed 2-0 in the game, but scored one in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth inning to take the lead.

Starting pitcher James Hiebert was named MVP of the championsh­ip game with Ryan Wall, Billy Friesen and Mitch Henry producing key hits in the game.
