City considers renaming two Windsor parks

Requests for Little River and Banwell Rd. sites to come before council this summer

Two city parks could be getting new names in the near future.

The city’s Environment, Transportation and Public Safety Standing Committee voted Wednesday to send a staff recommendation to council to rename the parks.

One of the properties in question is a city park in the Little River corridor that would be named Little River Dragonfly Park.

The staff report states that the Little River Enhancement Group, which has a dragonfly on its logo, requested the new name.

The park, to be managed as a natural heritage park similar to others including Ojibway Park, is unique in Windsor because it is exclusively a river valley and flood plain.

The suggested new name would reflect the park’s ecological importance, according to the report from city staff.

The other property is Lakeshore Woods Park, which would be renamed Banwell Park.

The land, which the city bought from a developer in 1997, contains two woodlots and two trails.

The park is under development but currently also has playground, basketball and ultimate Frisbee areas.

The staff report states that the park’s current name is confusing to many people because they associate it with the Town of Lakeshore.

Area residents already refer to it as Banwell Park because its main entrance is at 1415 Banwell Rd., according to the report.

The report suggests renaming the property would help with geographical identification, which would be especially important in emergencies.

The report to council states the only cost will be about $2,000 for new signs.

The decision will likely come before council in a few weeks.
