Hill climbs to top at Jamieson junior tourney

Beach Grove’s James Hill needed a tremendous rally over the back nine holes to earn his second junior boys’ division win of the season on the Jamieson Junior Golf Tour on Tuesday.

Hill, who won the season’s first stop in Riedgetown, was sitting at 4-over 40 at the turn on Tuesday at Seven Lakes Golf Club, but shot an impressive 5-under 30 on the back nine.

Hill finished with a 1-under total of 70 and that gave him a one-shot win over Pointe West’s Josh DiCarlo, who shot even-par 71.

Roseland’s Hannah Meloche also had to recover from a slow start on Tuesday to win the junior girls’ division. Meloche shot 7-over par on the front nine, but was 2-under over the final nine holes to finish with a 5-over 76 total. Pointe West’s Sophia Fallea finished second after shooting 82.

Rochester Place’s Bryce Hughes took the collegiate men’s division with even-par 71, which left him four shots ahead of Owen Coughlin and Carson McKinlay, who tied for second by shooting 4-over 75.

Essex’s Megan Schauer won the collegiate women’s division with a 1-over 76 total to best Fox Glen’s Katelin Lawson by a single stroke.

LY SITS IN EIGHTH

Jasmine Ly, who golfs out of Kingsville, sits in eighth place overall after the opening day of play on Tuesday of the 102st Investors Group Ontario Women’s Amateur Golf Championsh­ip.

Ly shot 2-over 74 and sits five shots back of leader Kelsey Sear heading into Wednesday’s second round of play at Galt Country Club in Cambridge.

ONTARIO FALLS IN SEMIS

For the second straight year, Team Saskatchew­an has relegated Team Ontario to the bronze medal game at the Football Canada Cup under-18 championsh­ip.

Team Ontario, which has six Essex Ravens, fell 11-9 to Team Saskatchew­an in semifinal play on Tuesday in Wolfville, N.S.

Ravens defensive end Christian Fecteau was named defensive player of the game. Team Ontario, which will play Alberta for the bronze medal on Friday, also features Essex defensive backs Mat Williams and Tylar Johnston, linebacker­s Jethro Oleko and James Halon along with slot receiver Justin Pope.

LAKERS CLAIM LONDON TITLE

The Leamington Lakers won all five games to claim the London Scorpion Summer Classic Midget A Baseball Tournament title.

Leamington beat the London Tincaps 12-2 to claim the title after knocking off the Pickering Red Sox, Brampton Royals, Amherstbur­g Cardinals and Newmarket Hawks in earlier games.

Pitcher James Hiebert posted a pair of wins in the tournament with Kameron Wall, Lucas Lamotte and Billy Friesen also picking up pitching wins in the tournament.

Dawson Iles hit a pair of home runs in the tournament, with Ryan Wall and Kyle Wall each hitting a single home run.
