Four gold medals for area athletes
Teens collect 11 medals and four first-place finishes in Royal Canadian Legion event
Area athletes picked up 11 medals, including four gold medals, while competing for District A at the 40th Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Track and Field Championships.
The two-day meet, for athletes age 15 and under and 17 and under, wrapped up on Saturday at University of Windsor Stadium. Athletes needed a gold-medal performance to be considered for Ontario’s 40-athlete roster for the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championship, which is Aug. 11-13 in Brandon, Man.
The Windsor Legion’s Chase Canty picked up a gold medal in the youth boys’ 3,000 metres with a time of 8:54.61 and also won silver in the 1,500 metres in a time of 4:06.67.
The Windsor Legion’s Chloe Walker won two medals. She took gold in the youth girls’ 3,000 metres in 10:38.38 and won a bronze medal in the 2,000-metre steeplechase in 7:31.62
Jasmine Scott-Kilgo, from the Border City Athletics Club, won gold in the youth girls’ long jump with a leap of 5.52 metres while the Windsor Legion’s Arseniy Chertov also won a gold medal with his time of 6:19.48 taking the youth boys’ 2,000-metre steeplechase.
Border City’s Jaidyn Nyhoff won a silver medal in the midget girls’ triple jump with a leap of 11.29 metres.
The University of Windsor Athletic Club’s Audrey O’Connor won a pair of bronze medals. She placed third in the youth girls’ shot put with a best toss of 12.21 and added another third-place finish in the hammer with a best effort of 41.25 metres.
Jacqueline Turner, who competed unattached, won a bronze medal in the midget girls shot put with a throw of 11.15 metres and University of Windsor Athletics Club’s Sean Yang won a bronze medal in the midget boys’ discus with a throw of 44.35 metres.
