Colchester celebrates 225 years with history and entertainment

The 225th-anniversary celebration for the community of Colchester will offer a full day of fun-filled entertainment and the opportunity to learn more about the rich history of this lakeside village.

The action for “Get Your Red and White On” celebration begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29 with an all-day beach volleyball tournament at Colchester Park.

Europeans first settled in Colchester in the 18th century. A number of United Empire Loyalists received land grants in the area during the American Revolutionary War and it was a destination for slaves escaping the U.S. via the Underground Railroad.

Colchester is also the birthplace of inventor Elijah McCoy after whom the phrase “the real McCoy” was coined.

An opening ceremony with a nod to the area’s heritage is slated for noon.

An interpretative plaque will be unveiled at the Peace Garden where a historical walking tour begins at 2 p.m.

History lessons aside, there’s plenty for the kids to do that day as well.

Children’s entertainer Beebo takes the main stage at 1 p.m. followed by Kingsport Environmental with a display of falcons, hawks and other birds of prey. There’s a village of bouncy castles and enchanted princesses.

Evening entertainment kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with Kingsville’s own Jen Knight along with Charlie Lambrick, Christian Vegh and Mudmen.

“We have packed it pretty full,” said Laurie Brett, the manager of communications for Essex. “It was intended to augment Explore the Shore.”

Explore the Shore is a two-day promotional tour of County Road 50 where participants are encouraged to visit local businesses and wineries July 29 and 30.

“It’s not really child oriented,” Brett said of that event. “So this is intended to bring more people to Colchester Harbour, to provide something for children and to provide some evening entertainment.”

The day wraps up with fireworks at 9:45 p.m.

Admission and parking is free. A free shuttle from Essex Centre and McGregor is available by reservation. Those interested in the shuttle can reserve a seat by phone at 519-776-7336, ext. 1124 or online at essex.ca.

The Colchester 225 celebration was made possible by a $41,000 grant from the Ontario 150 Community Celebration program.
