LaSalle launches alert system

-

LaSalle has launched a new high-tech emergency notification system that can be tailored to residents’ requirements. Fire Chief Dave Sutton said the Everbridge Mass Notification System, which replaced the old Reverse 911 model, is customizable in several ways. “One of the big advantages of the new system is that individuals can select … how they want to be notified and prioritize whether they prefer to receive a text message first and then if they don’t answer that an email or on the land line or cellphone,” Sutton said. “The system is pretty intuitive. Once it’s confirmed or answered at one point of contact then it stops going through the menu to the other devices.” Several adults in one household can also receive notifications if they each have their own contact information registered. Sutton said the system will allow the town to send messages to targeted neighbourhoods, as little as half a block of residents or an entire region of the municipality. It will be used to provide information on emergency situations such as floods, large fires or evacuations, share official updates, instructions and/or precautions. But Sutton said residents must still follow weather forecasting sites and social media for weather warnings. “This is more in response to severe weather events rather than the warning of the event itself.” The town has collected data from a number of sources, including the old Reverse 911 system, but the chief said much of that data could be outdated. He is encouraging all residents to go to the selfdirected registration website at lasallealerts.ca and choose how to be notified. Residents can also call 519-969-7770 or visit the town hall. The town is planning to test the system this fall.
