5 ROOKIES TO WATCH
This year’s NHL rookie class might not have an Auston Matthews or a Patrik Laine, but here are five players who could turn heads in their first season.
Clayton Keller, F, Arizona
Keller is a big-time producer, having set the U.S. National Team Development Program’s all-time points record and leading Boston University in scoring as a freshman.
Charlie McAvoy, D, Boston
The Bruins got a taste of what McAvoy could bring to their defence last year, when the 19-year-old went from college to the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, chipping in with three assists.
Nico Hischier, F, New Jersey
The Swiss centre had 86 points in 57 games as a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League rookie last season. Expect Hischier to get an opportunity to play a big role.
Thomas Chabot, D, Ottawa
The Senators have been patient with the 2015 pick and the wait might have been worth it. Chabot was the MVP at the world juniors and was named QMJHL defenceman of the year last season.
Alex DeBrincat, F, Chicago
In trading for Brandon Saad, the Blackhawks lost Artemi Panarin and will be without Marian Hossa. That should give DeBrincat, who had 127 points for Erie last season, a chance at top-six minutes.
