Judging Windsor’s best pizza should be easy as pie

- DALSON CHEN dchen@postmedia.com

You don’t have to be stoned to appreciate good pizza — but the folks at downtown Windsor cannabis lounge Higher Limits still think they’re pretty qualified to judge who has the best pie in the city.

Pizza fans: Prepare for the second edition of Windsor Pizza Fest, starting in October. A dozen local pizza-makers will be going slicefor-slice over the course of five biweekly contest rounds to determine who’s the top wheel dealer.

Last year’s contest featured the participation of The Original Gino’s Pizza, Arcata, Riviera, Cheese Wheelz, Sam’s Pizzeria, Davinci’s, Dominos, Slices & Squares, Armando’s, Primo, Angelo’s, and Mj’s Pizza & Wings.

The Original Gino’s Pizza, Sam’s Pizzeria and Armando’s emerged as the three finalists — but it was Sam’s Pizzeria who ultimately took the title of best pizza in Windsor.

Ralph Mattano, owner of Sam’s, said he saw a “huge increase in business in the weeks after we won, and deliveries doubled!”

Will Sam’s Pizzeria successfully defend its title this year?

We’ll find out on the night of Oct. 2, when Windsor Pizza Fest 2017 begins again.

The first round will have Sam’s taking on Primo, along with the new kid on the block — Downtown Pizza Co.

Subsequent rounds with other pizzerias will happen Oct. 16, Oct. 30 and Nov. 13.

The final round — where the winner will be declared — is Nov. 27.

Pizza time on each date is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Every competitor must make three pies: One Windsor-style pizza, one meatless, and one specialty pizza on which anything goes.

Businesses interested in participating should contact Higher Limits co-owner Jon Liedtke at 519-819-7908 or jon@higherlimits.buzz.

“Show us what you’ve got,” Liedtke challenged.

“We’re willing to accept all entries and we pay for the pizzas.”

For members of the public who just want to sample the tasty pies: Tickets are $15 at the door for each round. Admission price includes six slices and a beverage.

Advance tickets are $12, available online via ourevent.ca.

All rounds will be held at Higher Limits (251 Ouellette Ave.).
