Wynne supports downtown Windsor

-

Re: Downtown’s future has been undermined by Wynne’s indifference, opinion column by Gord Henderson, Sept. 2.

Gord Henderson’s claim that this Ontario government has shown “callous indifference” to downtown Windsor is not supported by facts.

This government is committed to ensuring that all students at every one of Ontario’s colleges and universities receives a world class education. The Liberal government has been and will continue to be a strong supporter of the University of Windsor.

The Ontario government has invested more than $105 million in capital investments at the University of Windsor since 2003. This includes more than $23 million in the past four years.

In 2015-16, the University of Windsor received $92 million in operational funding from the Ontario government.

This is a 34 per cent increase since 2003.

The province has provided $15 million to support the university’s downtown campus development of the School of Social Work in the historic Windsor Star property and the School of Creative Arts in the Windsor Armouries and the former bus depot.

The Wynne government is committed to accessible, high quality post-secondary education for every region in Ontario including WindsorEssex.

Windsor’s downtown core is a critically important part of this city and the evidence here shows that the Liberal government supports the city’s revitalization effort.

I’m concerned that Mr. Henderson’s column does more to suggest a cynical, transactional view of politics than it does to invite a balanced view of the facts. Jessica Sartori, vice-president, southwestern region, Ontario Liberal Party, Windsor
