Lancers remain winless after getting trampled by Mustangs

The University of Windsor Lancers remain winless at the midway mark of the OUA football season.

The Lancers (0-4) fell 59-7 to the No. 4-ranked University of Western Mustangs (4-0) on Saturday before a crowd of 1,178 at Alumni Field.

Running back Marcus Ketner had the lone Windsor touchdown. Ketner, who led the Lancers with 60 yards rushing on 13 carries, scored on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter.

In his debut with the Lancers, former Western quarterbac­k Ben Bergamin was 9-for-27 for 92 yards.

Defensivel­y, Matt Gayer was one of three Lancers to finish in double digits in tackles. Gayer had 12 tackles and an intercepti­on, Daniel Metcalfe had 11 tackles and Andrew Beatty finished with 10 tackles.

FRATMEN KEEP ROLLING

The first-place Windsor AKO Fratmen made it five-straight wins on Saturday with a 32-21 win on the road over the Hamilton Hurricanes in Ontario Football Conference play.

Running back D’Angelo Knox rushed for 172 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns while running back Jakoby Jones also had two touchdown runs. Andrew Beaton had three converts, a field goal and AKO (5-1) recorded a safety against the Hurricanes (3-2).

FLYERS STAY UNBEATEN

The Leamington Flyers stayed unbeaten with a 3-2 win in overtime on the road over the Sarnia Legionnair­es on Saturday in Western Conference play in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Maddux Rychel got the winner at 2:44 of the second overtime. It was his second goal of the season with Preston Corp forcing overtime for the Flyers (4-0-0-0) with the only goal of the third period. Leamington goalie Connor Meyerink made 43 saves against Sarnia (1-2-0-1) to get the win in net.

ADMIRALS TAKE OPENER

Ryan Alexander scored three goals to help the Amherstbur­g Admirals win its home opener with a 5-3 win over the Petrolia Flyers on Sunday in Bill Stobbs Division play in the Provincial Junior Hockey League at the Libro Centre.

Caleb Paquette and Dylan Muzzatti had single goals for the Admirals while goalie Catalin Morin made 23 saves for the win.

JONES TAKES WIN

In his first race for the St. Clair College Saints cross-country team, freshman Tyler Jones captured the men’s eight-kilometre race at the Fanshawe Invitation­al in London Saturday.

Jones took the win in a time of 27:21 and helped the Saints to a third-place finish in the team standings.

Beth Horrobin led the women’s team with a ninth-place finish overall as the team placed ninth.

LANCERS SOCCER

The University of Windsor Lancers men’s soccer team split a pair of weekend OUA games while the women’s team was only able to earn a point in two games.

The men’s team (3-5-1) beat Waterloo 3-2 on Sunday with Anthony Pollock, Kyle Ruggaber and Nathan Clemmings each scoring a goal, but fell 3-1 to Laurier on Saturday with Dylan Satto scoring the lone Windsor goal.

The women’s team (3-2-4) fell 1-0 to Waterloo on Sunday and played to a 1-1 draw with Laurier on Saturday with Jade Samping scoring the lone goal.

SAINTS SOCCER SPLITS

The St. Clair College Saints women’s soccer team made it three-straight wins to start the OCAA season on Sunday with a late goal leading to a 2-1 win over the Niagara Knights. The men’s team fell 4-2 to the Knights.

For the women’s team, Alexandria Schooley scored in the 92nd minute off a scramble to give the Saints the win. Julia Albeartie had given the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

In the men’s game, the Knights built a 4-0 lead before Stefan Zastavniko­vic and Matt Montaleone scored for the Saints.

TFC STARS FALL

The Windsor TFC Stars dropped a 3-2 decision to the Sanjaxx Lions on Sunday in League 1 Ontario men’s soccer action.

Chad White and Paul DiMeo had the goals for the Stars (5-104) against Sanjaxx (4-12-3).
