Windsor’s Biblioasis celebrates fall book releases

-

The leaves will be turning soon — and so will the pages. It’s a new season for Windsor’s Biblioasis. The critically acclaimed independent publisher is celebrating its fall release schedule with a reading tour of featured writers. The tour concludes on Friday night with a free event at the Biblioasis store in Walkerville. Five members of the Biblioasis roster will present excerpts from their latest published works, writes Dalson Chen.

IN THE CAGE KEVIN HARDCASTLE

The first full-length novel by Midland-born author Kevin Hardcastle is a two-fisted telling of the life of Daniel — a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who finds himself sinking into a life of crime and rural poverty.

Hardcastle’s gritty prose has been earning this book praise from reviewers for The Globe and Mail, The National Post, the Toronto Star, CBC and more.

WHAT CAN YOU DO CYNTHIA FLOOD

Self-deception is a recurring theme in this collection of short stories by veteran feminist author Cynthia Flood. These 12 pieces explore the complexities and failures of adult emotions and motivations. Don’t expect redemption for the characters in Flood’s unflinching narratives here.

RED, YELLOW, GREEN ALEJANDRO SARAVIA

Bolivian-Canadian writer Alejandro Saravia crosses national and personal borders in his second novel. A traumatized Bolivian soldier escapes to Montreal after a bloody coup. But even in peaceful Canada, he’s haunted by his past — especially when he falls for a Kurdish woman who’s committed to a rebel movement in the Middle East.

Originally written in Spanish, translated by Maria Jose Gimenez.

CLASS CLOWN PINO COLUCCIO

Toronto poet Pino Coluccio enjoys wordplay, so it’s appropriate that his latest collection of verse is named for those who seek to amuse. But don’t mistake the irreverence for lack of substance — readers will find classic poetic themes such as love, death and the passage of time.

PENINSULA SINKING DAVID HUEBERT

Halifax-born author David Huebert (now a London resident) returns to the East Coast for his debut collection of short stories. Each of these eight narratives feature Maritime characters from various walks of life — all of them striving to find balance in an increasingly chaotic world.

Quill & Quire magazine has described Huebert as “one of Canada’s most impressive young writers.”

The 2017 Fall Reading Tour comes to Biblioasis (1520 Wyandotte St. E.) in Walkerville on Friday.
