FIVE THINGS ABOUT A NEW HOTEL
1 THE IDEA
The Resort, on the Caribbean island of Eleuthera, is custombuilt for large sizes, with chairs a metre wide, extra-wide doorways and steel reinforced bed frames and lounge chairs. It also features an allyou-can-eat buffet serving comfort food three times a day. The hotel is geared toward guests who weigh more than 280 pounds so they can enjoy a holiday without worrying about taunts from fellow travellers.
2 THE THOUGHT BEHIND IT
Owner James King said: “It’s a sanctuary. It’s a place where you can come and have a good holiday without any judgment.” A group of British tourists is to test his premise for a new TV series, The 18-30 Stone Holiday (A stone is 14 pounds). The makers say the group will undergo a “radical new approach to confronting the prejudice they encounter.”
3 WHAT GOES ON THERE
Activities at the resort, which has a private eight-kilometre beach away from prying eyes, include group therapy sessions, sharing their worst photographs and receiving counselling on body issues from Mel Cohen, a size 27 model from Scotland.
4 THE REALITY TV STARS
Adam, 32, and his wife Ami, 28, weigh 308 pounds and 336 pounds respectively. Ami said: “Our honeymoon was spent arguing. We rowed a lot over me not wanting to go to the pool.” Adam is hoping that during the week at The Resort, Ami will finally pluck up the courage to reveal her body in public.
5 A MODEL’S THOUGHTS
Included in the group is English plus-size model Holly Macgillivray, 27, who wants to help her fellow guests feel more comfortable with their bodies. “I wanted to go on there to show that fat people are not ugly,” said the 290-pound model.
