Local laughs, Glengarry twist and racy romance
It’s the 2017 edition of the Windsor International Film Festival! One of the city’s most popular cultural events, WIFF offers seven days of great movies from around the world at two downtown venues, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 5.
To help cinema lovers navigate the impressive list of 113 films, the festival’s executive director Vincent Georgie met up with Windsor Star staffers Dalson Chen and Julian Revin to talk about choice screenings on each festival date. Here are their picks for Thursday — the fourth day of WIFF 2017.
VINCENT’S PICK
Stand Up Man: (Unrated, 8 p.m. at Capitol Theatre)
You’ll see lots of familiar sights and shooting locations in this charming Windsor-made comedy about a young Korean-Canadian trying to make it as a standup comic. Newcomer Daniel Jun stars as Moses — who finds himself back in his hometown of Windsor due to family obligations. Wackiness ensues when Moses takes in his eccentric, fresh-from-Korea cousin Joon-Ho as a roommate.
DALSON’S PICK
Live Read: Glengarry Glen Ross (Rated 14A, 8 p.m. at Capitol Theatre)
Not a film screening, but a live reading — where a table of actors read aloud a famous script. Last year, attendees enjoyed a rendition of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. This year, you’ll be able to witness David Mamet’s tale of battling real estate salesmen, Glengarry Glen Ross. But there’s a twist: all that confrontational, foul-mouthed, hyper-masculine dialogue will be performed by an all-female cast.
JULIAN’S PICK
Racer and the Jailbird (Le fidele): (Unrated, 8 p.m. at Chrysler Theatre)
Matthias Schoenaerts plays Bibi, a gangster. Adele Exarchopoulos plays Gigi, a race car driver. They’re brash, they’re beautiful, they’re crazy in love — but their passion will be put to the test when one of Bibi’s heists goes horribly wrong. Part torrid romance, part nail-biting crime story, this Belgian film has already been entered in the best foreign language category at the 90th Academy Awards.
