Windsor Star

The Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars face off Thursday, and Ken Wiebe has the lowdown on all you need to know.

1 Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey vs. Tyler Seguin

The Jets’ top defensive pair has done an excellent job in head-to-head battles with Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby. But Seguin has tremendous numbers against the Jets during his career (17 goals, 30 points in 28 games) and especially since joining the Stars (15 goals, 26 points in 18 games).

2 Keep it going

In the early stages of the season, Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck has been nothing short of exceptional. In starting seven of the past nine games, he has run his record to 6-0-1, lowered his goalsagainst average to 1.91 and raised his save percentage to .940 — which leaves him near the top of the NHL in both categories. Most importantly, he’s not allowing the soft goals that were far too prevalent last season.

3 Discipline required

The Jets have done a better job in this area, but played with fire Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild, surviving five power-play opportunities in a 2-1 win. The Stars have the top power play in the NHL, so take penalties at your own peril.

4 Stay sharp

When the Jets do head to the penalty box, they’ll feel a level of comfort as the penalty killers have allowed only four goals in 31 opportunities (87.1 per cent) since allowing four goals during the first two games. They’ve killed off 15 of 16 penalties during the past four games.

5 Laine must get involved

There are going to be lulls for goal scorers over the course of a season, but what’s strange about this four-game drought for Jets sniper Patrik Laine is that it looked like he was putting a slow start behind him with a two-goal showing against the Wild on Oct. 20. In that game, he recorded a career-high eight shots on goal and had 10 shot attempts. In four games since, Laine has only five shots on goal. Laine scored two of his three hat tricks against the Stars last season and had eight goals and 12 points in five games.

A final note: Don’t forget about Jason Spezza. While much of the attention focuses on limiting offence for Tyler Seguin and captain Jamie Benn, veteran centre Spezza has made a habit of producing against the Jets. In 41 career games against them, he has 15 goals and 48 points.
