Arabic speakers quick to help

-

On the evening of Oct. 27, I was in travelling north on Walker Road when the turn signals and lights of the rental car I was driving began malfunctioning.

It was dark and raining heavily. Drivers around me were honking, yelling and gesturing. I was finally able to get to the outside lane of traffic but not without nearly being struck twice.

I immediately turned into a Tim Hortons parking lot. I ran inside and approached the only people there. It was a group of Arabic-speaking young people.

Without hesitating, two of the men came out into the dark and rain and helped me find the source of the problem. I was so stressed that they had to patiently repeat themselves several times.

I am sure that they were soaked by the time they returned indoors. Whoever you are, thank you. You could have easily declined to help or could have even taken advantage of a vulnerable person alone in a dark and vacant parking lot.

Instead, you helped a complete stranger who was in need and in a foreign city. You did this expecting nothing in return.

Canadians are so blessed that at some point either you or your parents or grandparents were directed to make this country your home.

We benefit immensely by having you as kind members of our society. Melanie Froese, St. Mary’s
