Lancer men gallop to sixth-place finish at U Sports cross-country championsh­ip

The University of Windsor Lancers finished sixth in the men’s team competitio­n Sunday at the U Sports cross-country championsh­ips in Victoria.

Shawn Masters led the Lancers with a 10th-place finish in 10-km race in 31 minutes 49 seconds and was named a second-team all-Canadian along with teammate Andrew Nebel, who was 12th in 31:51.

On the women’s side, the Lancers’ Stef Smith was also a secondteam all-Canadian selection after finishing ninth in the eight-km race in 22:28.

JONES ALL-CANADIAN

St. Clair College Saints freshman runner Tyler Jones finished seventh in the men’s eight-km race at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n cross-country championsh­ips Saturday in Blainville, Que.

Competing in a field of 130 runners, Jones, a Sandwich high school product, finished the race in 26:07 to earn all-Canadian team status.

St. Clair’s Gavin Wesley was 38th, Andre Tomasian was 46th and Justin Fokeringa placed 81st to help the men’s team to a fifthplace finish.

The women’s team finished 18th led by Beth Horrobin’s 67th-place finish.

MULDER LEADS BULLS

Windsor native Mychal Mulder tied for the team scoring lead with 24 points Saturday as the Windsor City Bulls dropped a 114-111 decision to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in NBA G League action.

The 23-year-old Mulder, the Bulls’ first-round pick out of the University of Kentucky, hit 10 of 15 shots, including a trio of threepoint shots, and added four assists and four rebounds.

VIPERS BLANK KINGS

Goalie Dershahn Stewart made 24 saves to earn his second shutout of the season as the LaSalle Vipers beat the Komoka Kings 3-0 Saturday in Western Conference play in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

In a game that was scoreless after two periods, the Vipers (11-8-0-1) got two goals from Manny Silverio and one into an empty net by Max Sieberer to beat the Kings (5-123-1).

FLYERS FALL SHORT

The Sarnia Legionnair­es scored three unanswered goals in the third period to rally for a 5-3 win over first-place Leamington Flyers Saturday in the GOJHL.

Preston Corp, Jaydon Fetter and Griffin Robinson scored for the Flyers (14-5-1-1) against the Legionnair­es (10-7-1-2).

ADMIRALS DROP BLADES

Cory Burns scored twice to lead the Amherstbur­g Admirals to a 5-2 win over the Blenheim Blades in Bills Stobbs Division play Saturday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Bryce McGregor, Amilio Acampora and Josh Talerico added single goals for the Admirals (8-7-2-1) against the Blades (7-9-0-1).

SAINTS BASKETBALL TEAMS FEAST ON SAULT

The St. Clair Saints men’s and women’s basketball teams both used a winless Sault College squad to boost OCAA records over the weekend.

The men (2-3) beat the Sault (06) 107-71 Sunday at the Sportsplex and 97-27 Saturday.

On Sunday, Jermaine Lynch had 20 points for the Saints, Lance Drummonds and Nik Veigli had 18 points each, while William LaraCaston had 17 and Gil Atencio added 14 points.

On Saturday, Drummonds had 31 points off the bench. Lara-Caston and Lynch 12 each and Glynn Willis-Paris had 10.

The women are now 3-2 after beating the Sault (0-6) by an 8522 count Sunday and 75-27 Saturday.

On Sunday, Shannon Kennedy had 12 points, Logan Kucera finished with 11 points and Nicole Tamm and Jana Kucera had 10 points each.

Kennedy had 14 in Saturday’s win with Tamm netting 11 and Kucera with 10.

LANCERS DROP TWO

Both University of Windsor Lancers men’s and women’s teams fell in extra time in OUA hockey action Saturday.

The women’s team got a thirdperio­d goal from Teah Burke to force overtime, but fell 3-2 in overtime to the Queen’s Gaels. Danielle Butler had the other goal for Windsor (0-1-6-1).

For the men, Konner Haas had the lone goal for the Lancers (3-4-3) in a 2-1 shootout loss on the road to the Laurier Golden Hawks.
