Profits over people in bridge battle

- Alfred (Fred) Rocheleau, Windsor

Re: Bridge firm wants Parkway link, opinion column, by Anne Jarvis, Nov. 2.

The desire expressed by the Ambassador Bridge Company is the ultimate in its narrowness of thought in dealing with people.

Its total focus has been the profit margin for the company, with little regard to the effect on the communities involved in the immediate area of the bridge.

The company has run ramrod over the feelings of the people of Windsor. Look at all those houses boarded up giving nice neighbourhoods the look of a ghetto.

It has spent millions of dollars fighting the building of a new bridge. It has lobbied loud and long in the corridors of the government powers, launched lawsuits and placed whatever obstacles possible to the idea of a new (government) bridge.

After hurting the people through narrowness of thinking, that same company wants to branch off the Herb Gray Parkway, the road that will lead to the new bridge. Where are the mea culpas? Where are the apologies? Where is the atonement for all the dirt left in their path fighting against that new bridge?

Are we now to bend over backwards to aid the flow of traffic to the Ambassador’s new bridge? If we do, then the Ambassador Bridge Company should pay the major portion of the costs involved as a form of retribution for the trail of negatives it has left in its tracks.
