Tesla Roadster reborn, does 0-100 in 1.9 seconds

- STANISLAV NACHEV

The Roadster, the car that put Tesla on the map almost a decade ago, has been revolutionized.

Following the reveal of its semi truck, Tesla dropped a surprise in the form of the new Roadster, reborn with some blistering specifications.

The new car will do the zeroto-100 km/h sprint in 1.9 seconds, hit 160 km/h from a standstill in 4.2 seconds, and top out at 402 km/h. Tesla claims it to be the quickest accelerating car in the world, and while there are no horsepower figures as of yet, the torque figure is insane at just under 7,400 pound-feet.

The new Roadster has twice the battery capacity of the Model S

P100D and uses three electric motors, one at the front and two at the back. The claimed range of the Tesla Roadster is almost 1,000 km.

There is seating for four and, with the roof on, it looks more like a coupe. However, the removable roof panel stows away in the trunk, turning it into a roadster, but let’s be honest, it’s more of a targa.

The Roadster definitely breaks some conventions in its design.

Tesla hasn’t detailed exact delivery dates or production numbers, but the Roadster is expected to begin production in 2020. Roadsters are expected to start at US$200,000 for the base and $250,000 for the Founder Series model — about $256,000 and $320,000 Canadian, respectively — and reservations start at US$50,000.
