Lajeunesse bounced at OFSAA

The Lajeunesse Royals were upset in the quarter-finals on Friday at the OFSAA girls’ A basketball championsh­ip in Timmins.

The No. 5-seeded Royals fell behind by 15 points after the first quarter and could not overcome the deficit in a 56-52 loss to No. 5 Breslau Woodland Christian as Jamilah Christian led Lajeunesse with 16 points.

Earlier in the day, the Royals reached the quarter-finals with a 46-19 win over No. 13 University of Toronto Schools. Lajeunesse held the opposition to a single point in the first quarter and jumped to an 18-point lead at the half and never looked back. Christian finished with 10 points for the Royals.

Saints ousted: The No. 12-ranked St. Anne Saints failed to advance to the quarter-finals on Friday at the OFSAA boys’ AAA volleyball championsh­ip in Waterloo.

St. Anne fell 2-0 to No. 2-ranked Mississaug­a by scores of 25-13 and 25-11 and also dropped both sets to No. 15-ranked Barrie Innisdale by scores of 29-27 and 25-19.

Lions eliminated: The No. 19-ranked Leamington Lions failed to reach the quarter-finals on Friday at the OFSAA boys’ AA volleyball championsh­ip in Brockville.

Leamington took both sets against No. 14 Peterborou­gh Adam Scott by scores of 25-9 and 25-20, but fell in three sets to No. 8 Nepean Franco- Ouest 25-12, 23-25 and 15-10 to finish fourth in its pool. Only the top two teams in each pool advanced to the quarter-finals.

Knights to OFSAA: The Holy Names Knights will face the No. 1 high school team in the country, according to CanadaFoot­ballChat.

The Knights, who are ranked No. 9 by CanadaFoot­ballChat, will face No. 1 London South on Tuesday in the OFSAA Western Bowl at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. Game time is 4 p.m.

London South won the OFSAA Independen­t Bowl last year by a 64-0 score over Caledonia McKinnon Park, while Holy Names is making its first bowl appearance since 2007 when they lost to London Mother Teresa in the Western Bowl.

Pairings for this year’s nine bowl games were determined by a draw in September. Holy Names, which ended Herman’s nine-year title run in WECSSAA, advanced with a 41-7 win over Sarnia St. Patrick in the SWOSSAA final.
