An 18-year-old female has been charged with attempted murder in relation to a shooting in Windsor’s west end on the weekend.

Police said the teenage accused, a Windsor resident, is also facing two counts of public mischief after investigators were misled to believe that the Dec. 30 incident involved an intruder.

Two other Windsor residents, a 39-year-old woman and another 18-year-old female, have also been charged with public mischief in relation to misleading police.

According to investigators, the true nature of the incident was “domestic-related.”

“(The accused and the victim) are in a domestic relationship,” said Windsor police spokesman Sgt. Steve Betteridge.

At press time Tuesday, the 22-year-old male victim remained in hospital recovering from a gunshot wound.

Police said the injury was not life-threatening, but detectives had not been able to interview the man, as of noon Tuesday.

“We’re very eager to talk to him, when he’s physically able,” Betteridge said. “That is obviously going to be a huge component of this investigation.”

On Dec. 30, patrol units responded around 9:50 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 2000 block of Union Street.

Officers arrived to a scene that police described as “chaotic,” with the injured male walking around outside the residence and other individuals yelling and screaming.

Essex-Windsor EMS took the man to hospital for treatment. No one else was hurt.

Attending officers were told by people at the scene that an intruder had entered the residence, shot the victim and fled on foot.

Detectives with the major crimes branch took over the case. As a result of their investigation — which included a search warrant on the residence, forensic evidence at the scene, and canvassing of the neighbourhood — police concluded there had been no intruder.

The three females were arrested and charged. Police said all three have since been released on promises to appear at future court dates.

The investigation remains active. Police have yet to find the firearm used in the shooting.

Betteridge said investigators aren’t seeking any other direct suspects. “It is always a concern any time a firearm is used in an offence, especially when it is used against another person. That being said, investigators are satisfied this was by no means a random incident.”
