Town seeks recognition from postal service

LaSalle Mayor Ken Antaya is hopeful residents will soon be able to use a mailing address that accurately reflects where they live.

In the past, much of the community had to write Windsor in the place-line as far as Canada Post was concerned.

“This has been going on for probably 30 years,” Antaya said of the federal corporation’s insistence on using Windsor in the address even though the actual location was LaSalle.

Antaya inquired about making the change with a Canada Post official last year and was told it would likely be approved if council passed a resolution requesting the change.

Council passed a resolution seeking the address change earlier this week and it’s been sent off to Canada Post.

Past councils had asked for the same thing but were always rebuffed.

“It got to the point where (Canada Post) was very stringent and strict about it,” Antaya said.

“Now all members of council can revisit this and have a smile on their faces.”

Antaya noted the change was important to the community’s sense of civic pride and autonomy.

Ideally, town officials would like the change in place for mailings pertaining to the October provincial election.

“Anything that happens in 2018 would be a bonus,” the mayor said.
