Windsor right-hander signs pro contract with Ottawa club

Windsor right-handed pitcher Bobby St. Pierre has signed with the Ottawa Champions of the CanAm Baseball League.

The 22-year-old St. Pierre is a Windsor Selects product who played at Wayne State University. He appeared briefly for the Champions last season and got into two games late in the season where he posted a 1.42 earned-run average.

“Signing with Ottawa is another highlight in my baseball career,” the six-foot-three, 230-pound St. Pierre said. “At the end of last summer, I signed with them and it gave me a taste of what profession­al baseball is.

“This will be my first full profession­al season, so it will be a learning curve, but I believe Ottawa could potentiall­y open a lot of doors into affiliated baseball.”

Ottawa opens its season on May 18th.

ALOUETTES INK CARTER

Windsor defensive back Michael Carter has agreed to a oneyear deal with the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes through the 2018 season.

The 31-year-old Carter, who is a Windsor AKO Fratmen product, will be entering his eighth season in the CFL.

Carter began his career with the B.C. Lions and has also been with Hamilton, Saskatchew­an, Toronto and Edmonton. This is his second tour with Montreal.

Carter played nine games with the Alouettes in 2017 and started three. He had 15 defensive tackles and two more on special teams.

WILLOUGHBY RINK RULES

Debbie Willoughby skipped her Curling Club of Kingsville rink to the Ladies Best Western Provincial championsh­ip in Picton.

Willoughby’s rink, which includes vice Sheila Kerrigan, second Vicki Tilt-Cruickshan­k and lead Kristine Nohavicka, went a perfect 4-0 in the 18-team event, which featured single-knockout play.

Willoughby’s rink opened with an 8-5 win over Yvonne Skipoweicz’s Renfrew club and then beat the Tracey Jones rink from Arthur 8-7 with a steal in the final end. The squad then took out Irene Wilson’s Brampton rink by a 6-5 score before taking the championsh­ip final by a 6-3 count over the Patricia Bandurka’s rink from Dixie.

OLEKO HELPS CANADA

Essex Ravens linebacker Jethro Oleko helped Canada’s Under-18 national football squad to a 44-26 win over the United States in the Internatio­nal Bowl in Arlington, Texas.

The victory is the fifth in the last six years for the Canadian squad, which rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to win the game.

The five-foot-11, 190-pound Oleko, who is a L’Essor high school student, was the lone area player on the under-18 squad.

ARMY VS. NAVY

HMCS Hunter will host Army on Saturday in an Army versus Navy hockey match as part of Hockey Day in Canada celebratio­ns.

The game is the first outdoor match between the two teams and will be held at Lanspeary Park starting at 1 p.m. with the winner taking home the Grapes Cup. A public skate will follow the match.

WINTER LACROSSE CLINIC

The Windsor Warlocks and Windsor Clippers are set to hold winter lacrosse clinics starting on Sunday.

The clinics will run through March 21 and will be held at Central Park Athletics from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (for girls or boys born in 2006-2015) and from 11 a.m. to 12 noon for player born in 1997-2005. The cost is $10 per session.
