An early morning call Sunday for a dead body is being treated as suspicious by police.

Windsor police said an autopsy will be preformed to determine the cause of death for male in his 70s found in a home at 3275 Bloomfield Road in the city’s west end. Police aren’t releasing details, but say evidence at the scene led them to believe the death may be suspicious.

A neighbour said he knew the elderly man who lived in the white bungalow.

Todd Peretti said he was awoken by the sound of sirens around 4 a.m. Hours later, Peretti and his friend Tyler Ferrier watched as officers, including at least one police dog, combed the area around the small house.

Peretti said he had run into the man who lived in the house around 7 p.m. Saturday. Peretti said the man looked distressed and was walking hunched over.

“I said, ‘Len, you OK?” Peretti said. “I said, ‘Do you need a smoke?’ and he said ‘Yeah’ so I said, “Let’s go, I’ll walk you there and walk you home.”

They walked to a nearby store to purchase cigarettes together but Peretti said when he turned around to leave the store, Len “was gone.”

He didn’t know where he went or what happened to him.

Hearing the early morning sirens, Peretti jumped out of bed, put his coat on and went outside to see what was going on.

“There was police, ambulances, fire trucks, four cop cars,” he said. “They had flashlights and they were looking for footprints.”

Ferrier said the neighbourhood is usually pretty quiet.

“I didn’t see much,” Ferrier said, adding he was walking over to visit his friend Sunday morning when he saw the police at the scene.

“I don’t know the gentleman but I’ve seen him a couple times. As far as I know he was harmless.”

Sunday, a single police cruiser guarded the scene, which was cordoned off with yellow caution tape.
