Chatham woman at ease after Lotto win

- ELLWOOD SHREVE

It’s been said money can’t buy happiness, but for a Chatham woman who won a $500,000 lottery prize, it sure is providing a lot of relief.

Christy Redding said when she found out how much money she won from splitting half a Maximillions prize from the Feb. 23 Lotto Max draw, it felt like she could actually breathe better. As the legal guardian of her twoyear-old granddaughter, born with severe cerebral palsy, Redding said one of her first thoughts was: “I don’t have to worry about my granddaughter’s wheelchair. “It was like (the pressures) just literally lifted,” she added. Redding said her granddaughter, Harlow, who turns two years old

on Friday, was supposed to have her current wheelchair until age three, but has already outgrown it. Other plans for the money include finding an open-concept home where the tracking in the ceiling can be installed for a lift for Harlow. She said she also plans to put money away for the future. Redding just wants to enjoy some of the basic things in life many people take for granted. “I can actually look at the flyers and not think, ‘I wish I had the money,’” she said. She plans to get her hair done and buy a new bedroom set. Redding bought her winning ticket at Ann’s Convenience & Video in Chathamto keep her boyfriend from pestering her, because he had a dream that she had won the lottery.
