Lowe’s eyes new store in city

Former Rona building would be expanded

- DAVE BATTAGELLO

Lowe’s — the big-box hardware retail chain — is not talking about it, but the company has submitted a site plan to the city to open a new location inside a former Rona store on the east end. “Before confirming any store development plans, there are several steps, such as negotiations and permits involved,” said Valerie Gonzalo, spokeswoman for Lowe’s Canada.

“Until everything is settled, we do not comment on any potential store growth projects.”

But the hardware chain has submitted a site plan to the city to open a second Lowe’s location in Windsor inside the former Rona store located at 7350 Catharine St. The building has remained vacant since 2013 when Rona shut down.

The former Rona store has since largely remained an eyesore on an otherwise busy corridor near the intersection of Tecumseh Road East and Lauzon Parkway. Lowe’s Canada acquired Rona in 2016.

The new store opening in Windsor is believed to be part of a company announcement in late 2016 when Lowe’s announced it would convert 40 Rona big-box stores across the country.

The east-end big-box building will essentially remain unchanged under the Lowe’s banner except for a 4,500-square-foot expansion of the warehouse area in the rear of the store, plus updating of the facade, according to documents submitted by the company to the City of Windsor.

No date was indicated on when the new store will open. The original Lowe’s location in Windsor is located in the 1800 block of Provincial Road.
