Woman charged with mail theft, fraud
A Windsor woman is facing an array of charges as the suspect in thefts from mailboxes, as well as the suspect in cheque fraud to the tune of thousands of dollars. Brittany Brouillette, 29, was arrested Tuesday when Windsor police encountered her walking in the lobby of an apartment building in the 400 block of Glengarry Avenue. Officers had attended the building to investigate a report of thefts from mailboxes. The building manager told police that numerous boxes had been damaged in recent days, and there had been several reports of missing mail. The building lobby is equipped with security video cameras. A review of the recordings showed an incident on March 21, around 3 a.m., when a female could be seen forcing open mailboxes and taking their contents.
The officers were able to identify a suspect. They found her in the lobby the same day. Meanwhile, investigators with the financial crimes branch were seeking the suspect on a previous matter.
On March 13, a business owner contacted police to report that a chequebook belonging to his business had been stolen, and someone had fraudulently cashed multiple cheques with amounts in the thousands.
Police learned that an attempt to cash the cheques in the suspect’s name had been made at a local business.
Brouillette is charged with mischief (under $5,000), theft from mail, uttering a forged cheque, fraud (under $5,000), possession of stolen property (under $5,000), and breach of recognizance. Anyone with more information about these incidents or this individual is encouraged to call investigators at 519-255-6700, ext. 4330.
