Free tours to explore city sites

- DAVE WADDELL

A series of Jane’s Walks and Rides will be held this weekend that will expose participants to new neighbourhoods, perspectives and menus.

The citizen-led journeys are inspired by author, activist and urban critic Jane Jacobs, who helped change thinking around city planning.

The walks get started at 5 p.m. Friday with a stroll through downtown Windsor called Artifacts in Plain Sight. The tour begins at the Downtown Community Collaborative (371 Wyandotte St. W ). A tour of Ford City will begin at the Ford City Community Garden (982 Drouillard Rd.) at 11 a.m. Saturday while those preferring a slow roll by bicycle can join Jane’s Ride for Mental Health Awareness. Cyclists will meet at the Bike Kitchen at the Capitol Theatre building at 10 a.m. and explore the city’s public art. The From Wilderness to YQG: Heart of Ward 9 walk will begin Saturday at noon from Lowe’s Canada at 1848 Provincial Road. Windsor resident Steve Palenkas leads this trek through the bustling centre of commerce, haven for leisure and a major hub for crossregion travel.

For lovers of food, the Downtown Windsor Foodie Tour leaves Saturday at 4 p.m. The tour begins at the base of the giant Canadian flag on the riverfront. Events wrap up Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Explore the Ojibway Prairie Complex tour. The tour begins at the Ojibway Nature Centre.
