Clippers up win streak to six

The Windsor Clippers are riding a six-game winning streak after Sunday’s 11-9 road win over the Point Edward Pacers in Ontario Lacrosse Associatio­n junior B action. Jake Rosa broke a third-period tie as the Clippers scored the final two goals of the game to secure the win and moved to within a half game of first-place Wallacebur­g in the Far West Division standings. Brayden Mayea had five goals and seven points to lead the Clippers while Rosa finished with three goals and four points.

Alex Mayhead, Brendan Wallace and Chase Kavanaugh, who also added four assists, rounded out the scoring for the Clippers (8-2). Goalie Chase Cosgrove made 25 saves against the Pacers (2-7). On Saturday, the Clippers got five goals and nine points from Kavanaugh in a 13-5 win over the St. Catharines Spartans at Forest Glade Arena.

Rosa, Mayea and Noah Bushnell added two goals each for the Clippers while Will Cecile and Evan Mihalic added single goals. Goalie Carson Hebner made 36 saves against Spartans (0-6-0).

RAVENS TAKE OPENER

The Essex Ravens senior varsity team opened the Ontario Provincial Football League season with a 35-28 road win on the road on Saturday over the Niagara Spears. Running back Danny Byrne scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 68 and four yards. Fullback Bjorn Vaillancou­rt also scored a pair of TDs on runs of seven and five yards. Defensive lineman Devin Veresuk had the other Essex TD as he scooped up a fumble and returned it 22 yards for a major. Kicker Cam Creechan converted all five touchdowns for the Ravens, who were dominant in the game and built a three-touchdown lead with three minutes to play.

The University of Windsor Lancers Drew Desjarlais and Evan Martin were members of the winning West Team at Saturday’s U Sports East-West Bowl in Quebec City. An offensive lineman, Desjarlais, who is an Essex Ravens product and Belle River high school grad, and Martin, who is a defensive back, attended the event, which is a showcase game for CFL teams looking at prospects for next year’s draft. Team West got the game-winning score with just over two minutes to play in a 15-14 win over Team East, which has lost the last three games of the series.

MCBRIDE FINISHES FIFTH

Windsor’s Brandon McBride opened his outdoor season on Saturday at the IAAF Diamond League event in Shanghai, China. The 23-year-old McBride, ran a season-best one minute, 45.78 seconds to finish in fifth place in the men’s 800-metre event.

TFC STILL WINLESS

Windsor TFC continues to look for its first win of the League1 Ontario men’s soccer season. Stefan Milidrag got Windsor TFC on the board first during Saturday ’s road match in Mississaug­a against Sigma FC. However, Sigma FC (1-0-0) was up a goal by halftime and won 4-1 to beat Windsor (0-2-1).
