Windsor police have arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a woman in the neck outside a downtown bar.

The woman was stabbed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday outside of a bar in the 100 block of Ouellette Avenue. Responding police officers found the victim on the sidewalk suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The attacker fled before police arrived. But officers spoke to several witnesses, reviewed security video and identified a suspect. Police determined the victim and assailant knew each other. Security footage obtained by the Star shows the man and woman appearing to have an argument that lasted several minutes. At one point, the man backs up, luring the victim away from foot traffic on the sidewalk. When the victim follows and moves closer to him, he suddenly attacks.

The man then flees as the woman stumbles backward, clutching her throat, before collapsing. Police issued a media release Wednesday with a suspect’s name and description.

Shortly after noon Thursday, officers with the provincial offender parole enforcement squad located the suspect in the 500 block of Wellington Avenue. Benjamin Carter, 21, a Windsor man with no fixed address, is facing a charge of attempted murder.
