St. Clair Green Giants rally for wins

St. Clair takes two from Copperhead­s in weekend action

The St. Clair Green Giants rallied for a pair of weekend wins against the Southern Ohio Copperhead­s in Great Lakes Collegiate Baseball League action at Lacasse Park. The Green Giants scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning for an 8-7 win on Sunday after rallying for a 6-5 win over the Copperhead­s on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Miguel Cienfuegos doubled home a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally St. Clair (16-11) past the Copperhead­s (17-7). Rodrigo Duluc and Harrison Jones each had two hits for the Green Giants while Carter Mossey drove in two runs.

On Saturday, the Green Giants scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead and held on for the win. Duluc had two hits and scored two runs while Gavin Homer hit a home run and drove in two runs. Right-hander Micah Harris, from Essex, got the win in relief with right-hander Jorge Murillo picking up the save.

MACDONALD TAKES GOLD

Windsor’s Jessica MacDonald won gold in the women’s 50kg division on Saturday at the Wrestling Canada Cup in Guelph. Belle River’s Jade Dufour placed sixth in the division.

The 30-year-old MacDonald, a three-time world championsh­ip medallist and two-time Commonweal­th Games medallist, beat Russians Nadezhda Sokolova and Anzhelika Vetoshknin­a along with China’s Jiang Zhu to capture the gold medal.

“I think I wrestled well,” MacDonald said in a release. “I think I wrestled composed. I was patient and didn’t try (to) force anything.” Tecumseh’s Jordie Steen also won gold in the men’s 92 kg division. He beat American Ben Provisor in the final.

RAVENS SEASON ENDS

The Essex Ravens senior varsity team saw its season come to an end on Saturday in Hamilton. The third-seeded Ravens dropped a 17-14 decision to the second-seeded Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Ontario Provincial Football League West Division semifinal. The teams were tied 14-14 at the half with Essex getting a touchdown run from Danny Byrne and James Hanlon returning a kick for another score.

Cam Creechan converted both Essex touchdowns, but Hamilton would get the win with the only points of the second half on a fourth-quarter field goal.

WOMEN’S INVITATION­AL BASEBALL

The Ontario squad featuring Essex’s Jessica MacPherson and Leamington’s Hannah Chacko failed to reach the medal round at Baseball Canada Women’s Invitation­al Championsh­ip.

The 19-year-old MacPherson batted .286 in the tournament with a .375 on-base percentage while the 15-year-old Chacko had just one hit in five games, but finished with a .364 on-base percentage.

CLIPPERS EARN AWARDS

Two members of the Windsor Clippers earned awards from the Ontario Lacrosse Associatio­n junior B league.

Chase Kavanaugh was named Western Conference most valuable player after winning the league scoring title with 54 goals and 122 points in 20 games. Meanwhile, Brayden Mayea was named the Western Conference rookie of the year. He finished second in the conference in scoring with 60 goals and 105 points, which left him fourth overall in league scoring.
