MARCHAND MAKES PLEDGE

$50M ‘community livability fund’

Mayoral candidate Matt Marchand has vowed to create a $50-million “community livability fund” for activities and amenities across Windsor if elected.

“From our discussions in the community, there is strong feeling we’re behind in quality-of-life assets,” he said on Monday. “This is an opportunity to close that gap.” The plan would see the special fund allocated over 10 years in the budget with the sole intent to help make the city a more attractive place to live, Marchand said. Suggestions for uses of the fund would come from community consultation and would be subject to approval by council.

The fund could also be used to attract and maintain “high-paying jobs,” Marchand said. “Residents want a city they can be proud of, one that meets housing needs, has a clean and safe downtown, outdoor gathering spots and low-cost activities for families,” he said. “Business wants a livable city for employees, a place that attracts investors and somewhere their employees can raise a family. If we want to attract high-paying jobs tomorrow, we need to invest in the community today.” Marchand said the “livability fund” could be used for community centres, added amenities in neighbourhood parks, and to support more city-wide activities. “We’ll bring the community together to get ideas,” he said. “Look at Detroit, for example, with how they have a lot going on in their downtown. We’ll get ideas and input from people on the best way to do this and have a community with strong livability.” Ward 9 city council candidate Kieran McKenzie joined Marchand on Monday to back the idea of developing such a community fund. The campaign announcement was held at Calderwood Park. “We have fallen behind in community-based investments,” McKenzie said.

“I like the idea of setting aside a specific fund that would target helping certain neighbourhoods in the city.

“Ward 9 is the only one without a library or community centre. Calderwood Park is a good example of a nice space where there could be an opportunity to do incredible things along those lines.”
