Funeral arrangements set for slain student
Arrangements have been made for the university student who was shot to death in downtown Windsor — while more gun violence erupts in the Peel Region, where he was from.
Visitation for Jason PantlitzSolomon, 20, will take place at a funeral centre in Mississauga on Thursday, to be followed by a service in Brampton and burial in Woodbridge on Saturday. A candlelight vigil by family and friends was held last weekend on a beach in Etobicoke.
The third-year University of Windsor student is survived by his father and mother, a younger brother, a younger sister, and an identical twin brother — Jerome Solomon. “(Jason) will be remembered as a caring and compassionate soul who will be missed by the many whose lives he touched,” reads PantlitzSolomon’s obituary. Questions surround the Aug. 27 homicide, which took place shortly before 2:40 a.m. on the northeast corner of the intersection of Ouellette and University avenues in downtown Windsor. According to police, initial reports indicate two male suspects approached the victim and multiple shots were fired. Few other details have been released, but Windsor police investigators are describing the shooting as a “targeted incident.” Windsor police spokesman Sgt. Steve Betteridge said on Tuesday that investigators are now confident that this homicide has ties to the Peel Region.
The investigation remains “very active.” Pantlitz-Solomon was from the Brampton and Mississauga area but began attending the University of Windsor in 2016 for studies in criminology and psychology. He was a graduate of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga.
His death is the fifth homicide investigation by Windsor police so far this year.
The Labour Day weekend was a bloody one for gun violence in the Peel Region, with two deadly shootings in Brampton on Sunday. Two men and a woman were killed.
