Maggio living OHL dream
Tecumseh teen signs with Ottawa 67’s after solid showing at development camp
Tecumseh’s Matthew Maggio has signed with the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s.
The 15-year-old Maggio was the ALLIANCE player of the year last season after scoring 20 goals and 44 points in 33 games for the Sun County Panthers minor midgets. “Coming into camp, I knew it was going to be hard, there are so many good players here,” Maggio said in a team release. “I think it’s every kid’s dream to play in the OHL. I still can’t believe it and I’m still in shock right now. This is probably one of the better days of my life and I’m excited to see where this takes me this year.”
Ottawa selected the five-foot-10, 169-pound Maggio in the fifth round of April’s OHL draft with the 86th pick overall. “Matthew made an impression on our staff at development camp with his skill and determination and carried that momentum through this summer’s Hockey Canada events,” 67’s general manager James Boyd said. “Matthew is a passionate player who our fans are going to enjoy watching as he continues his development with the 67’s.”
WORLD WRESTLING
Two area wrestlers are in Goiania, Brazil, to compete for Canada at the 2018 World University Wrestling championships. Belle River’s Jade Dufour, a fourth-year student at Concordia University, and Tecumseh’s Linda Morais, a Concordia University grad, are part of Canada’s 16-athlete team.
The 25-year-old Morais is the only athlete returning to the team from the 2016 squad, where she won the gold medal in the women’s 60kg division. She won a bronze medal for Canada at the 2016 world championships and recently represented Canada at the Pan American championships in Peru.
The 21-year-old Dufour is a national bronze medallist in the women’s 51kg division and won a bronze medal for Canada at the world junior championships in 2016.
SLEDGE HOCKEY
Two area players secured roster spots from Canada’s women’s national sledge hockey out of training camp, which was held at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg. Windsor’s Jessica Matassa and Sudbury native Danica McPhee, who now lives in Windsor, were named to the 16-player roster. “I’m really proud of how the community showed their support for us,” the 32-year-old Matassa said about the camp in Amherstburg. “Every year the talent depth of athletes gets bigger. It’s exciting to be a part of this growing sport and be named to the team for another season.”
The team will head to Minnesota in February for a three-game series with the United States in preparation for an event in Europe in early spring.
HILL SOLID
It was a sparkling freshman debut for Lakeshore’s James Hill with the University of Detroit Mercy Titans men’s golf team. Hill, an Assumption high school product, posted a top 10 finish in his debut event with the Titans at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate golf tournament in Verona, N.Y.
Detroit Mercy finished fifth in the team competition, led by Hill, who finished the tournament with a three-day total of three-under par total of 214 on the 6,882-yard course. Individually, Hill finished seventh overall and posted the best score by a Titan since 2016 while becoming the first Detroit Mercy freshman to finish under par since 2012.
