GM YZERMAN BOLTS FROM TAMPA

- Michael Traikos

Steve Yzerman is stepping down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning after building them into a perennial contender, handing the reins to longtime assistant Julien BriseBois two days before training camp. Yzerman also put together the Canadian Olympic teams that won back-toback gold medals in 2010 and 2014. “This change is important for me, which will allow me to spend more time with my family,” Yzerman said at a news conference, adding he is 100 per cent committed to his adviser role for the upcoming season. “After that, I don’t know.” Whether this move was really for Yzerman to be closer to his family in Michigan or the Bolts pushed him aside at the risk of losing BriseBois, this move isn’t permanent. Detroit, where he spent his entire career as a player and before working under GM Ken Holland, seems to be the most likely landing spot.
