Get intersections under control

-

We must do something about the very poor and unsafe standard of driving in our area and the effect it has on our roads.

Running red lights and stop signs, stacking our cars in intersections, tailgating, speeding, distracted and impaired driving and non-use of turn signals.

The first two items are easy to fix and control. Beginning with the worst intersections for collisions in the city (there must be records), install red-light cameras to pick off the culprits running through. Paint safety grids in the intersections (like the Europeans) where it is illegal to enter the grid unless your exit is clear. It is easy for the police to spot and ticket the offenders who just sit in the middle blocking the intersection and then only clear it after the change of lights. For most of the other items, we need to make sure the police have all the tools required to ticket for impairment or distraction, including law changes, if necessary, in respect to accessing cellphone records at crash sites. Finally, turn signals. Drivers look upon turn signals as an optional accessory in the vehicle like the radio or CD player. It is a critical safety issue that you signal other road users if you plan to change course.

If Windsor can spend $1.5 million on pretty Christmas lights, let’s be brave and spend some money on installing red-light cameras and paint safety grids at those intersections that historically have suffered the most carnage. This will be a first step — as the fines add up, hopefully driving standards will begin to improve.
