Burgess leads Lancer women to golf bronze

LaSalle’s Melanie Burgess was an individual bronze medallist in helping the University of Windsor Lancers to the women’s team bronze medal at the OUA golf championsh­ips in Hamilton. A sophomore out of Sandwich high school, Burgess, who was tied for seventh after the opening round, had the best round of the second and final day of competitio­n in blustery conditions at Point Golf Links. Burgess fired a 10-over par 80, which left her with a twoday total of 163 and just three shots back of the leader. Teammate Tavia Maurvoic finished ninth overall with a tworound total of 173. Nicole Cesca of the Lancers tied for 13th with a total of 179 and Sophia Fallea tied for 17th with a total of 180. The team finished with a total score of 515, good for third place and six shots ahead of fourth-place Waterloo.

The Windsor’ men, meanwhile, finished seventh with a total of 637. Nikishante­ss Penashue led the way for the Lancers. He tied for fourth overall with a two-day total of 11-over 153, which was just one shot off the podium. The Lancers’ Jarrod Smith tied for 16th with a 158, Austen Friesen tied for 35th at 162 while Justin Cheetham and Graham Byrne tied for 53rd at 168

LANCERS FASTPITCH

Second baseman Madeline Scott and third baseman Kori Irwin were named to the Ontario Intercolle­giate Women’s Fastpitch Associatio­n all-star team on Wednesday. Scott, a Lajeunesse high school product, completed her third season with the team and led the club in all offensive categories while batting leadoff for the Lancers. Irwin finished her first season with just two errors in 18 games while also posting some of the top offensive numbers for the team.

FRATMEN HONOURED

Four members of the Windsor AKO Fratmen were named Ontario Football Conference defensive all-stars on Wednesday. Defensive lineman Jordan Krug, linebacker Jalen Butcher and defensive backs Spencer Trinier and Elijah Blythe were among 14 players named to the OFC defensive all-star team.
