AKO Fratmen advance to provincial gridiron final

Windsor tops London Beefeaters 46-0, while St. Clair teams win OCAA silver

The Windsor AKO Fratmen are headed back to the Ontario Football Conference championsh­ip. The defending champion Fratmen beat the London Beefeaters 46-0 in Saturday’s semifinal at Alumni Field.

Receiver Omar Hayes-Williams led the AKO offence with seven catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Nash Prieur ran for 180 yards, but it was running back Duhanaj Pren that ran in two scores.

Dylan Samuels also had a touchdown reception for the Fratmen while kicker Andrew Beaton kicked a field goal, a single and six converts.

BASEBALL SILVER

The St. Clair Saints claimed the silver medal at the OCAA baseball championsh­ip in Oshawa on Saturday.

St. Clair reached the gold-medal final after a 5-4 win over the Fanshawe Falcons, but fell 14-5 to the Humber Hawks in the final. Against Fanshawe, Tommy Cheng walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for St. Clair.

Garik Godard went 4-for-4, drove in two runs and scored three runs and also picked up the pitching win with an inning of scoreless relief. Brendan Renaud added two hits.

Against Humber, the Saints jumped to an early 5-0 lead, but the Hawks roared back for the win. Kyle Gagnon had three hits for St. Clair with Godard and Miguel Cienfuegos adding two each.

SOFTBALL SILVER

The St. Clair Saints women’s softball team earned the silver medal at the OCAA championsh­ip in Kitchener on Saturday.

St. Clair reached the final with a 15-5 win over the Fanshawe Falcons, but fell 6-2 in the final to the Durham Lords.

Against Fanshawe, Alexandra Senft, Rya Cowan and Hannah DesRosiers each had three hits in St. Clair’s 17-hit attack. DesRosiers and Jordan Taylor each had a pair of hits against Durham.

SAINTS SOCCER

The St. Clair Saints women’s soccer team upset the Sheridan Bruins in Oakville on Saturday to advance to the OCAA championsh­ip. Sheridan finished second in the Central Division and hosted the crossover playoff game against the Saints, who were fourth in the Western Division.

The Bruins, who had allowed just 11 goals in 10 games, fell behind early as Ryan Morneau put the Saints up 1-0 in the sixth minute. Sheridan tied the game, but Cassie Nicholas put St. Clair up a goal once again and Saints goalie Madison Kaldenbach would make it stand up for the win.

The men’s team fell 2-1 to the Durham Lords in Oshawa in OCAA crossover playoff action on Saturday. Tyrone Mulder gave St. Clair an early lead just six minutes into the game, but Durham tied the game before halftime and got the winning goal early in the second half.

LANCERS FOOTBALL

The University of Windsor Lancers closed out the OUA football season with a 17-5 loss to the McMaster Marauders at Alumni Field.

Kicker Clark Green hit a 34-yard field goal for Windsor’s only offensive points with the Lancers (1-7) recording a safety against the Marauders (5-3). Defensivel­y, Windsor linebacker Daniel Metcalfe had 13 tackles, two sacks and forced two fumbles.

LANCERS BASKETBALL

The University of Windsor Lancers men’s and women’s teams each won on the road to open the OUA basketball season against the Warriors in Waterloo on Saturday. For the men’s team, Damian Persaud scored a game-high 24 points in an 82-68 win over Waterloo. Anthony Zrvnar finished with 19 points, Chris Poloniato had 12 points off the bench while freshman Thomas Kennedy chipped in with 11 points.

The women’s team had 10 players hit the scoresheet in a 70-49 win over the Warriors.

Tyra Blizzard led the way with 17 points while Eve Uwayesu finished with 11 points.

SAINTS BASKETBALL

The St. Clair Saints men’s and women’s teams each fell in their respective openers of the OCAA basketball season on the road Saturday against the Sheridan Bruins teams.

The men dropped a 119-108 decision to the Bruins. David Gomez and Jalen Sykes each had 31 points for the Saints. Ian Smart chipped in with 14 points and Nik Veigli added 10 points off the bench. The women’s team fell 83-68 to Sheridan. Anna Ulicny led the Saints with 21 points while Logan Kucera finished with 17 points.
