For the first time in his political career, Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain breathed easily on an election night.

The 69-year-old was acclaimed, maintaining his seat for the fourth consecutive term.

“It’s nice to know the residents have confidence in me to continue,” he said.

Before becoming mayor in 2006, the retired school principal served as Lakeshore’s deputy mayor for one term. Looking forward, Bain’s top priority is infrastructure: “Residential growth is booming, and we have to keep up with it to draw new business to the area.”

That includes addressing Lakeshore’s need for a hotel or motel structure. The Atlas Tube Centre draws many athletes from out of town, as well as their families, and they need a place to stay, Bain said. At the request of residents, Bain said he’s looking into bringing more fast-food establishments to Lakeshore. He also plans to increase the amount of road paving and sewer line replacement. For the coming term, Bain hopes to see the same level of co-operation among council members as he has seen in the recent past. “We’ve got a lot on our plate,” he said. “I hope we are able to continue to work as one strong team.” Bain will not, however, continue on as leader of Essex County Council after eight straight years as Warden of Essex County — intending instead to spend a bit more time with family.
