WIFF Picks: Day 3

-

It’s time to enjoy the 14th edition of the Windsor International Film Festival, featuring more than 100 titles from around the world, all screening in downtown Windsor over seven days. With so many interesting films to choose from, we thought moviegoers could use some recommendations on each day’s schedule, courtesy of WIFF executive director Vincent Georgie, Windsor Star reporter Dalson Chen and Windsor Star marketing manager Dalia Mazhar.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Akira - 9:45 p.m., Capitol Theatre This is the iconic 1988 Japanese animated film that made “anime” a household word. See this post-apocalyptic cyberpunk sci-fi epic on the big screen.

Army of Darkness - 10 p.m., Chrysler Theatre

The 1992 finale of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy is the definition of a cult classic. Quote along as Ash battles the Deadites on a dark comedy/fantasy adventure.

VINCENT’S PICK

Love, Gilda - 6 p.m., Capitol Theatre

Second City and Saturday Night Live alumnus Gilda Radner defined being a funny woman in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This touching documentary describes the late comedian in her own words and the words of some of her legendary colleagues, including Lorne Michaels, Martin Short, Chevy Chase, and more.

DALSON’S PICK

Summer of 84 - 9:45 p.m., Capitol Theatre

Halloween is a fitting night for this story about four bike-riding kids who suspect a serial killer has come to their small town in Oregon in the year 1984. If you’re catching Stranger Things vibes, you’re entirely correct. Think synth-y soundtrack, pop culture dialogue, horror movie homages and 1980s nostalgia.

DALIA’S PICK

Studio 54 - 10 p.m., Windsor Armouries

For three years in the late 1970s, one spot in New York City had the best nightlife in the world. More than a discotheque, Studio 54 was a cultural phenomenon, an adventure in hedonism. Learn the real story of the rise and fall of the hottest nightclub ever in this new documentary.
