The Windsor Police Service has announced the member who will oversee their law enforcement efforts in their new jurisdiction of Amherstburg: Staff Sgt. David DeLuca.

As of Jan. 1, DeLuca will be the officer in charge of Windsor Police Service’s Amherstburg detachment.

Described as a lifelong Amherstburg resident, DeLuca said he considers his coming responsibilities to be a privilege. “I look forward to the opportunity to work in my hometown and continue the tradition of exceptional police service that the residents have come to expect and enjoy,” said DeLuca in a news release from Windsor police. DeLuca was hired by Windsor Police Service as a cadet in 1995. He was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in November 2017. Over the course of DeLuca’s 23- year policing career to date, he has gained experience in a wide variety of areas, including the patrol division, forensics, drug enforcement, street crimes, domestic violence, the internet child exploitation unit and the special projects unit. Before policing, DeLuca studied medical lab technology at St. Clair College and achieved a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Windsor.

Windsor police said in the news release that they are “looking forward to working together with the residents of the Town of Amherstburg with the goal of public safety.” On Oct. 12, the City of Windsor and the Town of Amherstburg signed a deal to have Windsor Police Service take over Amherstburg ’s policing for 20 years. There is an 18-month probationary period; either municipality can pull out of the arrangement. The terms of the agreement will be reviewed every five years. According to Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, the change will save the Town of Amherstburg about $570,000 annually.

The Amherstburg Police Association represents 33 uniformed and civilian members. All Amherstburg officers and personnel have been offered continuing work under the new arrangement. The Amherstburg Police Service building at 532 Sandwich St. South will remain operational.
