Lancers men fall in hoops

Meanwhile, women’s team breaks losing streak with solid victory over Mustangs

The WFCU Centre brought no luck to the University of Windsor Lancers men’s basketball team on Saturday while the women’s team stayed at the St. Denis Centre and snapped a two-game losing streak. Playing before the Windsor Express season opener, the men’s team fell 76-57 to the Western Mustangs while the women’s team scored a 77-46 win over the Mustangs.

In the men’s game, the Mustangs opened a 12-point lead at the half, and the Lancers could not recover as the team lost its third straight game. Telloy Simon had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers (2-5) while freshman Thomas Kennedy chipped in with a dozen points against Western (4-3). The women’s team took control of the match early and shot 50 per cent from the floor and 57.1 per cent from behind the arc. Kayah Clarke finished with a game-high 16 points for the Lancers (4-3) while Eve Uwayesu had 14 points and Olivia Osamusali added 12 points against the Mustangs (1-6).

The Windsor Express watched a 20-point lead at the half disappear as the club dropped its NBL of Canada opener 126-123 to the expansion Sudbury Five before an announced crowd of 1,405 at the WFCU Centre on Saturday. Ryan Anderson finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Express while Horace Gormley finished with 26 points and 12 assists. Juan Pattillo added 18 points and 12 rebounds and Richard Amardi also had 18 points. DeAndre Thomas came off the bench to score 14 points and Reggie Hamilton finished with 11 points.

The St. Clair College Saints men’s basketball team picked up a seven-point win over the nationally ranked Niagara Knights while the women’s team let a 16-point lead slip away in a 77-76 loss to the Knights at the SportsPlex.

In the men’s game, David Gomez Jr. finished with 32 points for the Saints (3-3) while Jalen Sykes added 30 points and 10 rebounds and Nik Veigli finished with 11 points against the Knights (5-2).

In the women’s game, Jana Kucera led the Saints (4-2) with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Noor Bazzi added 15 points and Logan Kucera finished with 11 points against the Knights (3-4). Liam Hall, Zach Taylor and Josh King scored goals as the Leamington Flyers grabbed a 3-0 win on the road over the Komoka Kings on Saturday in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. Goalie Zach Borgiel made 22 saves for the Flyers (11-6-1-2) against the Kings (8-13-0-0) to record his second shutout of the season.

The No. 7-ranked University of Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team dropped a four-set match in Toronto to the Varsity Blues on Saturday in OUA action. Windsor dropped the match 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22. Brad Gyemi had 14 kills and 10 digs for the Lancers (6-2) while Pierce Johnson added another 12 kills against Toronto (5-2). The women’s team fell 3-0 to Toronto by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 27-25. Lexi Pollard finished with 10 kills for the Lancers (2-6) against the Varsity Blues (5-2).
