Neighbours voice opinions on planned Huntington road closure
A public information session held Wednesday to gather feedback on a plan to close access to Huntington Avenue as part of the Cabana Road widening project drew a mix of opinions.
“Some supported the closure, some had concerns about what would happen after the closure,” Jane He, a City of Windsor senior engineer who is project manager for the Cabana project, said Thursday.
She said the session, held at Roseland elementary school, was well attended by people living on Huntington and surrounding streets.
Closing Huntington is one of the recommendations of the Cabana Road Environmental Assessment that outlines the design of the road from Walker Road (where it’s called Division Road), to Huron Church Road.
On such a major arterial road project, engineers try to minimize the access points to minimize accidents and prevent drivers from using residential roads as shortcuts, she said.
The $46-million job is being done in phases.
The section between Provincial Road and Howard Avenue was recently completed. The section between Howard and Dougall avenues where Huntington is located is being done next year.
Closing a street is always a sensitive subject, he said. A final recommendation will be going to a committee of council and then to council for final approval so there will be more opportunities for the public to have a say.
