Leamington woman receives a gift of security

Attack survivor wins alarm contest

- TREVOR WILHELM twilhelm@postmedia.com

A Leamington woman who has been living in fear after she was brutally attacked and left for dead now has some peace of mind thanks to an early Christmas present from a local security company. Haifa Gebrail, who spent six months in hospital after being attacked in her own home, recently received a security system and a personal emergency response button from Security ONE.

“We just want her to go back to living a normal life,” said Sam Sleiman, Gebrail’s uncle. “Haifa is a survivor, a thriver, and a fighter.” Gebrail, 36, was attacked June 22 in her home on Wigle Street in Leamington. She suffered lifethreatening injuries. Essex County OPP charged Robert Chad Hearns with attempted murder. Gebrail was recently released from hospital and is living on her own again, but she is still haunted by emotional scars.

“She suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and sometimes has trouble sleeping,” Sleiman said. But she received some help through the fifth annual Who Deserves to Win contest from Security ONE Alarm Systems. The company received more than 200 nominations in two months, with Gebrail being the “overwhelming winner.” Company representatives armed Gebrail’s doors and windows. They also gave her a personal emergency response button with GPS and two-way voice communication. It works anywhere in North America. “What happened to Haifa is every person’s worst nightmare. It’s the kind of crime you only see on TV or in the movies,” said Corey Robertson, Security ONE’s sales and loyalty manager. “We’ve seen the Leamington community rally around Haifa, and we couldn’t be prouder to help give her and her family the peace of mind and protection they deserve.” Gebrail said the present will help take away some of the fear of being alone in her own home.

“Old Haifa passed away,” she said. “New Haifa is here to stay. I’m so thankful to this community and to Security ONE.”

We just want hertogo back to living a normal life. Haifaisa survivor, a thriver, and a fighter.
